Last week at Port Douglas Markets was a bit of a washout. While we enjoy the wet season, the unseasonable rain certainly puts a damper on things. As many stallholders can attest, packing up in the pouring rain is less than ideal. The marquees and produce can get soaked, leading to a tedious drying process when we get home.
We had our hands full drying out not only our marquee but also our 3m*3m as our neighbour's marquee collapsed and we loaned him our small one to the incredulous comments of other stallholders 'You carry a spare marquee!'
This week, we're back to our larger 7.5x3m stall, which offers more space for customers to browse and is more accessible for those with disabilities.
The Grand Fondo Bike Race had an impact on foot traffic. With roads often closed due to rain, accidents, or falling trees, it's not surprising that few people are willing to make a 4-5 hour round trip to attend the market when the Captain Cook Highway is closed. However, closing the Captain Cook Highway also locks potential customers in Port Douglas driving them to the market instead. At least those who decided against a reef trip dodged a bullet as they would have been greener than Kermit after a sushi buffet.
The Pottery remained busy throughout July and August. Ken's been firing the kilns regularly, with Hercules reaching a remarkable 591 fires, Opal at 502, and Sparky catching up at 440.
We're looking forward to a drier week ahead and hope to see you at the market on Sunday.
