In this 1280 glaze fire you can see how the fallen cones confirm the accuracy of the temperature at the top and bottom of the kiln. Using cones is more accurate than firing using a pyrometer. In the photo the cones slump from the left at 1240 (C7), 1260 (C8), and 1280 (C9) degrees which is the required glaze fire temperature. The remaining upright cone (C10), is the guard cone for 1300 degrees.
